San Francisco, CA - At a city council meeting in San Francisco this week, activists demanded that the state of California, which was never a slave state and was a only a territory during the Civil War, pay reparations to descendants of slaves.
“Even though this policy doesn’t make any sense and would in fact be a slap in the face to actual slaves, we’re demanding at least $230,000 for every descendant of slavery,” said one activist at the city council meeting.
“This racist policy of treating Americans differently based on their skin color is exactly what Martin Luther King was fighting for in Selma, Alabama, all those years ago,” continued the same activist. I must have overlooked the part of the "I have a dream" speech where Civil Rights activists were seaking monetary compensation instead of equal treatment under the law.
