Denmark now has plans of introducing mandatory military conscription for women in an effort to sharply increase the size of its armed forces.
Jakob Ellemann-Jensen, Denmark’s defense minister and deputy prime minister, announced his government’s plan to introduce women’s conscription during an interview with Danish television channel TV2.
He put emphasis on the fact that Danish armed forces cannot defend Denmark and the nation will need to start boosting its troop size.
“If we are to be able to strengthen our defense, we must have a basis from which to strengthen it. In public and private companies, you can grab employees from other places, but you can’t do that in the defense,” Ellemann-Jensen stated. “In the future, women must be called up for military service in the same way as men.”
