One in custody, I-85 reopen after bomb threat closed interstate in Greenville County

All lanes of Interstate 85 in Greenville County are open again after a bomb threat shut down traffic Jan. 2 near mile marker 44, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The driver of a tractor trailer is in police custody following the incident, said Heather Biance, a spokeswoman for the S.C. Department of Public Safety. The driver, a man from Illinois, will be identified later, the agency said.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the incident in the northbound lanes near White Horse Road.

Around 2:45 p.m., a S.C. State Transport Police officer stopped a tractor-trailer for driving on the interstate without a license plate on its trailer, the state Department of Public Safety said in a release just before 10 p.m.

The driver indicated to police that there were explosives in the commercial vehicle, according to the release, prompting law enforcement to shut down all six lanes of the highway.

Investigators found no explosives during a search of the tractor trailer.
