Progressive Strategists Announce Revolutionary 'Get Out Of Scrutiny Free' Card
WASHINGTON, D.C.—In a landmark move designed to streamline political discourse for the upcoming midterms, the influential progressive think tank, the Coalition for Redefining Acceptable Politics (CRAP), announced Thursday that all forms of criticism directed at certain candidates will henceforth be categorized as 'Islamophobia.' This new framework is expected to save campaigns millions in debate prep by replacing the need for substantive answers with a single, universally applicable accusation.
The announcement came during a sparsely attended press conference, where CRAP’s chief strategist, a person named Xylem, explained the elegant simplicity of the new system.
'For too long, our candidates have been burdened by the oppressive expectation to explain their voting records, defend their policy positions, or clarify their associations with fringe groups,' Xylem stated, adjusting their recycled-cardboard spectacles. 'We realized that debating facts is an outdated, problematic construct. It’s far more efficient and morally pure to simply label the questioner a bigot and end the conversation.'
According to a glossy pamphlet distributed at the event, the 'Islamophobia' designation can be applied to a wide range of inquiries, including but not limited to:
- Asking about a candidate's position on Hamas.
- Questioning why they voted against a bill that would fund local infrastructure.
- Bringing up controversial past statements made by the candidate or their campaign surrogates.
- Inquiring about their sources of campaign funding.
- Asking what they had for lunch if it wasn't a falafel wrap.
A 'Brave New Era' for Accountability-Free Politics
The new guideline has already been beta-tested in several local races with what CRAP calls 'tremendous success.' In one instance, a local news reporter asked a progressive candidate why she had referred to the American flag as a 'triggering symbol of colonial oppression.' The candidate’s campaign manager simply stepped to the microphone, declared the question 'a textbook example of violent Islamophobia,' and the press conference was immediately concluded.
Sources confirm the reporter has since been fired and is scheduled to attend a mandatory re-education seminar on the intersectionality of vexillology and religious intolerance.
'This is about creating safe spaces in the political arena,' Xylem continued, as an aide fanned them with a large palm frond. 'And what’s safer than a space where you can’t be questioned? It’s the ultimate form of emotional security. When a journalist asks a tough question, it’s not journalism; it’s an act of rhetorical violence. And we will not negotiate with aggressors.'
Mainstream media outlets have lauded the move as a 'long-overdue correction' to the 'often-toxic nature of public accountability.' A New York Times op-ed praised the strategy, calling it 'a powerful tool to de-platform hate speech, which now includes any speech we disagree with.' A CNN panel unanimously agreed that asking a politician to do their job is a 'dog whistle' for bigotry.
When one brave journalist at the CRAP press conference pointed out that this tactic might be used to shield non-Muslim candidates as well, effectively making the term meaningless, Xylem smiled knowingly. 'Exactly. It's an incredibly versatile shield. We're all a little bit Muslim when it's politically convenient, aren't we?'
CRAP has announced it is already workshopping its next line of 'discourse-ending' accusations for the 2024 election cycle, including a plan to label questions about the national debt 'transphobic' and any mention of inflation 'a direct assault on body positivity.'
