Progressive lawmakers unveiled a sweeping labor proposal this week that would require employers nationwide to provide additional paid leave for menstrual cycles, emotional exhaustion, difficult mornings, and exposure to opinions.
Supporters called the legislation a landmark achievement for worker dignity, while economists quietly began updating estimates for how many businesses can survive on vibes alone.
The bill arrives amid growing demands from activists who argue that traditional work schedules were designed during a problematic era when employees were expected to actually show up.
“America must finally recognize the invisible burden of existing,” said Representative Crystal Evergreen during a press conference attended by twelve reporters and three therapy goats. “Every worker deserves time to heal from life’s many challenges, especially those occurring between Sunday evening and Friday afternoon.”
Under the proposal, employees could qualify for several new categories of protected leave.
These reportedly include Menstrual Equity Days, Climate Anxiety Recovery Leave, Post-Debate Emotional Stabilization Hours, Social Media Trauma Weekends, and a new emergency classification known as Unexpected Accountability Events.
Human resources departments immediately expressed concern.
“We already have vacation days, sick days, personal days, mental health days, floating holidays, wellness Fridays, and mindfulness retreats,” said HR director Kevin Walters. “Apparently now we're adding leave for reading upsetting comments online.”
Activists responded by accusing employers of productivity supremacy.
“Workplace expectations are violence,” explained labor organizer River Sunshine. “The average employee encounters dozens of triggering realities each week, including deadlines, customers, and calendar invitations.”
Corporate America has already begun adapting.
Several major companies announced pilot programs replacing performance reviews with affirmation ceremonies.
Employees will receive promotions based on courage, vulnerability, and the number of times they describe themselves as exhausted.
One tech firm has reportedly eliminated attendance requirements altogether.
“We discovered our staff was happiest when nobody came to work,” said CEO Madison Bloom. “Productivity collapsed immediately, but morale metrics have never been stronger.”
Economists warned that extending leave benefits indefinitely may create unintended consequences.
Those concerns were quickly dismissed by lawmakers, who insisted economic output is merely a capitalist mindset.
“The GDP is a social construct,” said one congressional aide. “What truly matters is whether workers feel seen.”
The proposal has gained strong support among advocacy groups, many of whom argue the modern workplace remains deeply unfair.
“For centuries Americans have suffered under the cruel expectation of labor,” said activist Chloe Rainwater. “Frankly, it’s time employers start respecting the emotional complexity of opening a laptop.”
Congressional leaders are reportedly considering additional amendments before the bill reaches committee.
One version would allow workers to take paid leave whenever Mercury enters retrograde.
Another would provide federal grants for employees recovering from awkward Zoom interactions.
At press time, lawmakers had introduced a companion bill guaranteeing every American a four-day recovery period after hearing the phrase “circle back.”
