The White House announced a bold new initiative this week aimed at solving America’s egg crisis: forming a federal task force dedicated to figuring out why eggs exist in the first place.
Officials say the task force—formally titled the Interagency Committee on Egg Equity and Poultry Accountability—will include experts from the Departments of Agriculture, Energy, Transportation, Climate, Feelings, and Several Other Things No One Can Quite Explain.
Administration officials say the goal is simple: determine why eggs continue appearing in grocery stores despite the government holding multiple meetings asking them politely not to become expensive.
“We’re leaving no shell unturned,” said Task Force Chair Melissa Grant. “For too long Americans have been forced to confront the uncomfortable reality that chickens continue producing eggs without first consulting federal regulators.”
The task force plans to spend the next 18 months studying egg supply chains, poultry emotions, and whether chickens are producing eggs in a way that aligns with modern social values.
Several experts have already proposed possible explanations for the crisis.
“One theory is that chickens are reacting to climate change,” said poultry analyst Darren Cole. “Another possibility is capitalism. We’re still narrowing it down.”
Meanwhile, federal economists suggested that grocery stores may also be contributing to the issue by continuing to sell eggs.
“If stores simply stopped carrying eggs, prices would immediately fall to zero,” one economist explained.
