Schumer Unveils New 'Pre-Approved Bipartisanship' Program
WASHINGTON, D.C.—In a bold move to foster national unity, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Monday that the Democratic Party would be cracking down on unauthorized acts of bipartisanship, which sources confirm have been confusing the party’s messaging on togetherness. The clarification comes after Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) committed what is now being classified as a 'Level-5 Unity Breach' by endorsing Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME).
Speaking to a room of reporters who had already written their headlines, Schumer called the act of a Democrat endorsing a Republican a “despicable betrayal,” clarifying that the party’s countless calls to “reach across the aisle” were meant metaphorically, like a poetic flourish, and not as a literal instruction to interact positively with the opposition.
“When we say we want unity, we mean we want everyone to unify behind our excellent and unimpeachable agenda,” Schumer explained, gesturing to a flowchart that showed all paths leading to a box labeled ‘Our Way.’ “True bipartisanship is when Republicans courageously vote with us. Any other form, such as acknowledging their humanity or endorsing their re-election, is a betrayal of the very concept of coming together, which is, again, coming together behind us.”
The Committee for Sanctioned Cooperation
To prevent future unsanctioned outbreaks of goodwill, the Democratic caucus is reportedly forming a new subcommittee: The Committee for Sanctioned Cooperation (CSC). This body will be responsible for vetting all potential cross-party interactions, from co-sponsoring a bill to wishing a Republican ‘Happy Birthday’ on social media.
“We can’t have senators going rogue and just ‘finding common ground’ wherever they please,” said a fictional senior Democratic aide who we’ll call Arianna Vortez. “From now on, any senator wishing to engage in a bipartisan action must first submit Form 88-J, ‘Intent to Cooperate,’ to the CSC for approval. The committee will then determine if the Republican in question is one of the ‘good ones’ who can be temporarily trusted.”
An early draft of the committee’s guidelines, leaked to the press, includes a tiered system for infractions:
- Tier 1 Violation: Liking a Republican colleague’s family vacation photo. (Penalty: A sternly worded email.)
- Tier 2 Violation: Admitting a Republican made a “decent point” in a hearing. (Penalty: Mandatory viewing of The Rachel Maddow Show until compliance is achieved.)
- Tier 3 Violation (The ‘Manchin Maneuver’): A full cross-party endorsement. (Penalty: Public shaming, loss of committee assignments, and your designated parking spot will be moved to Virginia.)
Redefining Political Vocabulary
Political linguists praised the move as a long-overdue clarification of modern political terminology.
“For years, voters have been confused by the term ‘bipartisanship,’” said Dr. Evelyn Reed, a professor of semantics at a university that definitely exists. “The Democratic leadership is simply standardizing the definition. ‘Bipartisanship’ now officially means ‘when the other party does what we want.’ ‘Unity’ means ‘universal agreement with our platform.’ And ‘betrayal’ means ‘having a single thought that wasn’t pre-approved by the caucus.’”
The party leadership insists this new, more rigid definition of unity will ultimately heal the nation’s political divides by eliminating the confusing gray area where people from different parties treat each other with respect.
“We are the party of the big tent,” Schumer concluded in his press conference. “And that tent has a very strict, legally binding entry policy. You are welcome to join us in the tent, so long as you agree to never, ever speak to anyone outside of it. That is how we heal.”
