BUENOS AIRES — Argentina’s President Javier Milei won a landslide midterm election Sunday, proving that sometimes the cure for socialism is simply running out of other people’s money. His party, La Libertad Avanza, expanded its seats across Congress, ending the Peronist monopoly on economic failure.
“We’re bringing Argentina back from the brink of math denial,” Milei said, chainsaw in hand, referring to the new fiscal policy known as “spending less than you steal.” Economists confirmed early signs of recovery as inflation briefly hesitated out of fear.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated Milei, calling him “a fantastic guy — tremendous hair, even better economics.” Trump added that Argentina’s comeback “proves what happens when you fire your Marxists instead of promoting them.”
At publishing time, Peronist leaders were reportedly studying Milei’s reforms closely to see how he managed to make food affordable without nationalizing the cows.
