New Thanksgiving Guidelines Ban Gravy As 'Tool Of The Patriarchy'
PORTLAND, OR – As millions of Americans prepare to gather for their annual tradition of overeating and arguing about politics, a local activist group has offered a progressive alternative: canceling the holiday entirely and replacing it with a 'Day of Solemn Atonement,' featuring a centerpiece of one single, sustainably farmed lentil to be shared among all attendees.
The Portland chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America unveiled the proposal in a 78-page slideshow presentation, outlining why the holiday of Thanksgiving is fundamentally incompatible with modern, enlightened values. The document, titled "Decolonize Your Dinner Plate: A Manifesto," argues that the traditional turkey dinner is a multi-layered act of aggression.
"The entire meal is a monument to colonial violence and cis-hetero-normativity," explained Jaxon Fern, the chapter’s newly appointed Chair of Culinary Grievances. "The turkey, a flightless bird, symbolizes the oppression of marginalized bodies. Mashed potatoes represent the starchy blandness of white supremacy. And gravy, a processed slurry, is a viscous metaphor for the slow, creeping ooze of capitalism itself."
Under the proposed 'Day of Solemn Atonement,' families would begin the day not with football, but with a mandatory three-hour 'Privilege Check-In Circle.' During this session, each participant would be required to acknowledge their ancestral complicity in systemic oppression, with extra time allotted for anyone who can trace their lineage back to the Mayflower.
The communal meal, scheduled for late afternoon, would be a potluck affair, though with strict guidelines. All dishes must be gluten-free, non-GMO, locally foraged, and culturally non-appropriative. A list of banned ingredients includes salt (a symbol of imperial trade routes), sugar (problematic), and anything enjoyable.
The highlight of the meal is the ceremonial presentation of the Unity Lentil.
"Each person will be given a pair of sustainably sourced bamboo tweezers to break off a microscopic piece of the lentil," Fern detailed in the presentation. "This act symbolizes our commitment to collective struggle and the rejection of individualistic consumption. It also ensures we stay well below our daily caloric intake goals, which is a victory against fat-phobia."
After the lentil ceremony, the remainder of the evening would be devoted to watching a curated selection of documentaries about the ecological collapse caused by industrial farming. There will be no dessert, as 'the lingering taste of collective guilt is sweetness enough.'
Local reaction has been mixed. "I just wanted to deep-fry a turkey and watch the Cowboys," said area resident Gary Whitman, clutching a bag of frozen cranberries. "Now I’m being told my green bean casserole perpetuates a harmful narrative. I used almond milk!"
The DSA chapter remains optimistic that their proposal will catch on. "People are ready for a holiday that doesn't involve joy, family bonding, or delicious food," Fern stated confidently. "Next, we’re coming for Christmas. We’re thinking of replacing Santa with a committee that redistributes unequally received gifts based on a progressive algorithm."
